The circle around Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado said this week that 3 attempts to return to Venezuela from Panama, by sea and by air, were thwarted within roughly 24 hours. One was recorded in a flight manifest placing her among the passengers of an aircraft that never took off; the document does not establish why. “In recent hours there have been three attempts, by sea and air, from Panama, without success. That makes seven attempts — yes, seven — in recent weeks. They will not let her return to her own country,” her international relations adviser, Pedro Urruchurtu, wrote on X. The reasons given for the cancellations come from the account of journalist Idania Chirinos, of NTN24, who is accompanying Machado in Panama: on Monday (Sept. 21), a sea crossing was suspended when the vessel's owner cited mechanical faults that Chirinos called “strange”, even though Machado's passport had already been stamped by immigration; on Tuesday (Sept. 22) morning, a flight to Aruba did not take off; and in the afternoon the attempt via Curaçao fell through. “The Nobel Peace Prize winner is a prisoner in Panama,” Chirinos said.

High interest rates are weighing on Brazil’s economy as a whole, but the impact varies sharply by sector, creating a divide between businesses that are still managing to withstand tight monetary conditions and those already feeling the strain more acutely, the first edition of Itaú BBA’s Orange Book shows. The broad sector study, shared exclusively with Valor, finds oil and gas and mining among the strongest performers, supported by a robust investment cycle and the energy transition. Services, meanwhile, have more room to pass on higher costs and protect margins, although they remain exposed to domestic economic conditions. Traditional industry sits on the other side of the divide, facing uncertainty over tax reform, high costs, limited pricing power and growing foreign competition, particularly from China, which is having a significant impact on the automotive sector. With the benchmark Selic rate expected to remain above 12% next year, the gap between sectors is likely to persist, Itaú reported.

Brazil is producing more oil than ever, exporting large volumes, and reached 4.498 million barrels per day in July 2026. Nonetheless, consumers still encounter high prices for gasoline and diesel at the pump. The explanation lies less in the amount of oil extracted from beneath the seabed and more in the journey from crude oil to the fuel sold at the gas station. According to data from Brazil’s O&G Regulator (ANP), Brazilian oil production in July increased by 13.6% compared to the same month in 2025. When combined with gas, the country reached 5.851 million barrels of oil equivalent per day. On the other hand, domestic production of petroleum derivatives was close to 2.2 million barrels per day, marking a 1.4% decline. Brazilian refineries operated at an average utilization rate of 86.4% of their installed capacity. In practice, the country can place large quantities of crude oil in external markets, but that does not mean it produces all the necessary derivatives internally to meet Brazilian demand.
