Chinese companies urgently need to find new markets. Escalating trade tensions have made it more difficult and costly to sell things in the U.S. and Europe, long two of the largest destinations for Chinese exports. Brazil has emerged as the most coveted prize. Latin America’s largest economy, with a population of more than 200 million people, is a beacon for China’s delivery and ride-hailing companies looking to export their ruthlessly low-cost business models. Chinese e-commerce giants also see promise in Brazil as they seek new buyers for a flood of products after tariffs and other restrictions in the United States shut off their biggest export market.

JUN 20, 2025 - BNamericas

Brazil's congress decided to maintain the 20-year extension of subsidies granted to small hydroelectric plants (SHPs) and biomass and wind energy farms under the rules of the incentive program for renewable energy sources (Proinfa). The decision came after President Lula vetoed provisions in the offshore wind bill at the beginning of the year. For local lawyers and an energy consumer association, keeping the subsidies in place will increase electricity rates in the country. With the overturning of the vetoes, deputies and senators reestablished the possibility of extending the contracts of SHPs, biomass and wind power plants for up to 20 years, provided that those responsible for generation agree to new contractual conditions.

The world's largest car-carrying ship - with the equivalent of 20 football fields of vehicles - completed its maiden journey late last month to dock in Brazil's Itajai port. But not everyone is cheering its arrival. BYD China's top producer of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, is offering Brazilian car shoppers relatively low-priced options in a market where the green-car movement is still in its infancy. Brazilian auto-industry officials and labor leaders worry that the vast influx of cars from BYD and other Chinese automakers will set back domestic auto production and hurt jobs.

JUN 20, 2025 - Renewables Now

Brazilian power company CGN Brazil Energy, also known as CGNBE, has been given the go-ahead to put its roughly 165-MW Lagoinha Solar Complex into test operation. CGNBE has begun test operations at all four units of its Lagoinha solar complex after receiving approval from power sector regulator Aneel, the government agency said recently. Located in the municipality of Russas in northeastern Ceará state, the Lagoinha complex comprises roughly 337,000 solar panels installed on an area of 304 hectares. Construction work on the project began in December 2023.
