Brazil's Minister of Mines and Energy Alexandre Silveira has reportedly said he expects the development of a small modular reactor project with Russia in the near future. The comments came after the minister accompanied Brazil's President Lula to Moscow, where the leader held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Silveira told Brazilian newspaper Estadao that Russia's Rosatom was to "begin engaging with the Brazilian government shortly so we can move toward the development of small nuclear reactors, which will be vital for our energy future." In statements after the two presidents' talks, cooperation was stressed by both sides in a range of areas but "above all, on energy."

In Brazil, the deconstruction of cellulose is essential for the conversion of biomass into fuels and chemicals. But cellulose, the most abundant renewable polymer on the planet, is extremely recalcitrant to biological depolymerization. Although composed entirely of glucose units, its crystalline microfibrillar structure and association with lignin and hemicelluloses in plant cell walls make it highly resistant to degradation. As a result, its degradation in nature is slow and requires complex enzymatic systems. The deconstruction of cellulose, which could, among other things, significantly increase the production of ethanol from sugarcane, has been a major technological challenge for decades.

Latin America's rapid urbanization and industrialization have led to a rising need for improved transportation, energy, and telecommunication networks, presenting a significant opportunity for Chinese infrastructure firms to engage in mutually beneficial cooperation, analysts said. From Chancay Port in Peru and Bogota Metro Line 1 in Colombia to Jamaica's first modern highway and an ultrahigh voltage power transmission line in Brazil, the scale of China-Latin America cooperation in the field of infrastructure has continued to expand in recent years. China Development Bank told China Daily that it completed the latest round of RMB-denominated financing for an ultrahigh voltage direct current transmission project in northeastern Brazil.

Brazil's sugarcane producers are weighing sugar and ethanol production choices as sugar prices decline while ethanol gains appeal with rising oil costs. Flexibility is crucial for Brazil's sugarcane processors adjusting to market signals, as noted at the annual sugar market meeting in New York. Historically favoring sugar for its higher prices, processors now face a turnabout with sugar at 16.97 cents per pound, a three-year low. Traders signal a strategic pivot might be imminent if prices fall further to 16.5 cents. Rising oil prices, up 15% since May 2025, enhance ethanol's attractiveness, especially for mills less focused on exports.
